What is Electrosurgery?

Electrosurgery is a surgical technique that uses high-frequency electrical current to cut, coagulate, or modify biological tissue. In conventional electrosurgery systems operating in the range of 330–500 kHz, tissue interaction is associated with higher impedance and greater thermal spread compared to higher-frequency systems.

At 4 MHz, electrosurgical energy is considered more atraumatic because tissue impedance decreases as frequency increases. Biological tissue behaves predominantly as a capacitive medium, meaning its impedance is inversely related to frequency. As a result, higher frequencies allow more efficient energy transfer with reduced collateral thermal damage.

Comparative observations show different impedance behaviors in various tissue types such as skin, fat, and muscle, where each responds differently due to variations in water content and structure. Skin typically shows higher impedance, fat even higher due to low conductivity, while muscle has lower impedance because of higher water and electrolyte content.

Due to the lower impedance at higher frequencies, the same output power can be achieved with a lower required voltage, resulting in more controlled energy delivery and improved precision during surgical procedures.
